Cook privacy policy

Cook is a cooking app for iPhone and Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. You can cook without an account. An optional account keeps your recipes and settings so they can come back on a new phone. There are no ads, no ad tracking, and your data is never sold.

What Cook sends, and why

  • Recipes you add. Recipe text you paste, the text of a recipe web page you link, and photos you take or pick of cooking instructions are sent to an AI model provider (OpenRouter) so Cook can turn them into short steps. Photos are downscaled on the phone first. Cook does not keep a library of your photos.
  • What the glasses show. The current dish, step, ingredients for that step, timer, and related display fields are sent to Cook's hosted glasses page so your glasses can show them. A signed-in cook gets a private channel for this.
  • Your account, if you make one. Your email, display name, saved recipes, favorites, cook history, and the settings listed below are stored for that account at Berth (atberth.com). Each account can read only its own data.

What stays on your iPhone

  • Your saved recipe library, checked ingredients, unit choices, servings, your place in a recipe, and timers are kept on the phone.
  • Voice commands. When you tap the microphone, speech is turned into cooking commands on the phone whenever the phone supports on-device recognition. Listening stops when you leave the app and never runs in the background.
  • Read aloud uses the phone's own speech voice.
  • Timer notifications are scheduled locally on the phone.

Permissions Cook asks for

  • Camera and photos, only when you choose to photograph or pick a recipe page or packet. Cook does not take photos of people.
  • Microphone and speech recognition, only for spoken cooking commands like next, back, and start the timer.
  • Notifications, so a timer can tell you it is done when Cook is in the background.

If you sign in

  • You can sign in with email and a password, an emailed 6 digit code, or Sign in with Apple. Google sign-in appears only where it has been set up for Cook.
  • The phone keeps a sign-in token in the iOS Keychain so you stay signed in. Sign out stops sync and leaves your recipes on the phone. Sign out everywhere ends your other sessions too.
  • Synced: your recipe library (recipe, original paste, tweaks, scale, method, unit choices), favorites, cook history, appearance, units, model choice, sounds, read aloud, voice auto start, keep awake, timer notifications, the custom timer default, your profile, and your private glasses channel.
  • Not synced: a cook that is in progress, the Live Activity, notification schedules, permissions, and photos.
  • Delete account in the app removes the account and the data it owns.

What Cook does not do

  • No selling of your data.
  • No ads and no tracking for ads.
  • No analytics SDKs in the app. This website uses no cookies and no trackers.

Children

Cook is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
